The Opportunity:
Contra Costa Water District’s Operations & Maintenance department is seeking a skilled and forward-thinking Water Treatment Superintendent. This is a key leadership role that will serve as the District’s Chief Treatment Operator, responsible for overall performance, reliability, and regulatory compliance across three T5 water treatment plants and two packaged treatment systems within Los Vaqueros Watershed. What you will typically be responsible for:
- Building and maintaining positive working relationships with employees and key stakeholders.
- Supervising and mentoring two direct supervisors, supporting professional operator development, and promoting a culture of safety, inclusion, accountability, and shared responsibility.
- Serve as a key cross-departmental liaison partnering with Engineering, Maintenance, Water Quality, Planning and executive leadership to ensure aligned operations and coordinated decision-making.
- Coordinating operational and water quality communication with wholesale and retail partners to maintain strong interagency relationships, transparency, reliability, and public confidence.
- Overseeing regulatory compliance, state reporting, and agency coordination to ensure compliance with all drinking water requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Training: Equivalent to an associate degree with coursework in chemistry, biology, engineering, or related field.
Experience: Six (6) years of increasingly responsible experience operating a surface water treatment plant including two (2) years of supervisory or management experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license to be maintained throughout employment.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Grade T5 Water Treatment Operator certificate issued by the State Water Resources Control Board.
- Ability to obtain, and maintain possession of, an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliant Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certificate.
