JOB DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, performs technical duties in the operation of water treatment facilities; performs preventive and predictive maintenance on treatment plants and related facilities; operates Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to move water through treatment systems; and performs related duties as assigned.
- Operates, monitors, and maintains water treatment facilities and processes, including reverse osmosis, concentrate reduction, ion exchange, lime softening, and disinfection systems; ensures the effective and efficient operation of the advanced water treatment facilities.
- Monitors and controls treatment processes, adjusts equipment and chemical levels to optimize treatment processes and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
- Operates and adjusts treatment plant pumps, feeders, and other equipment to maintain appropriate plant operations; monitors the treatment processes, solids handling, including centrifuging and pellet reactor bed level maintenance.
- Operates the SCADA system to move water from groundwater wells to treatment plants and into the distribution system; responds to alarms and performs minor maintenance.
- Monitors clearwell levels by visual inspection and ensures adequate levels; reads meters, gauges, charts, and instruments.
- Mixes and adds treatment chemicals; assists in the storage and transfer of chlorine and other hazardous treatment chemicals.
- Reviews water quality results and calculates blending for Nitrate, PFAS, and other constituents in the water as needed to comply with state and federal water quality standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Water Treatment Operator II – IV: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, supplemented by specialized training in water treatment.
- Water Treatment Operator II: One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience working as a certified Treatment 2 Operator at a treatment or production facility equivalent to a Water Treatment Operator Trainee at Jurupa Community Services District.
- Water Treatment Operator III: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience working in a water treatment facility equivalent to the Water Treatment Operator II at Jurupa Community Services District.
- Water Treatment Operator IV: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience working in a water treatment facility equivalent to the Water Treatment Operator III at Jurupa Community Services District.
LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS
- Water Treatment Operator II – IV: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment. Possession of, or successful acquisition within twelve (12) months of appointment, valid CPR/First Aid/AED Certifications, to be maintained throughout employment. Possession of, or successful acquisition within twelve (12) months of appointment, a valid District-provided Forklift Operator Certification, to be maintained throughout employment.
- Water Treatment Operator II: Possession of a valid California State Water Resources Control Board Water Distribution Operator Grade II (D2) Certificate, to be maintained throughout employment. Possession of a valid California State Water Resources Control Board Water Treatment Operator Grade II (T2) Certificate, to be maintained throughout employment.
- Water Treatment Operator III: Possession of a valid California State Water Resources Control Board Water Distribution Operator Grade III (D3) Certificate, to be maintained throughout employment. Possession of a valid California State Water Resources Control Board Water Treatment Operator Grade III (T3) Certificate, to be maintained throughout employment.
- Water Treatment Operator IV: Possession of a valid California State Water Resources Control Board Water Distribution Operator Grade IV (D4) Certificate, to be maintained throughout employment. Possession of a valid California State Water Resources Control Board Water Treatment Operator Grade IV (T4) Certificate, to be maintained throughout employment.
