Water Distribution I
The Water Distribution I position performs a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the installation, maintenance, and repair, of the potable water distribution systems and related facilities. This position is the entry level class in the maintenance worker series and requires skill sets necessary for complex work assignments and lower Distribution Operator certification.
Under general supervision to preform a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the installation, maintenance and repair of the water distribution system; and to do related work under the direction of the Water Distribution Lead or designee.
Example of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
· Perform general maintenance and repair of potable water transmission and distribution systems.
· Install/repair/remove service connections, meters and meter boxes.
· Cut, fit, and install/repair water mainlines, clean and flush water mainlines; and repair/replace water mainlines valves and other related appurtenances.
· Inspect water distribution system for leaks due to pipeline or fitting failures, adequate flows and pressures and pump malfunctions.
· Operate distribution system valves and related water distribution equipment as assigned.
· Assist in directing, training and supervising subordinate field positions.
· Install or repair fire hydrants; and verify designed flow capacities and pressure levels as assigned.
· Perform related water system facilities maintenance and repair work as assigned.
· Operate various Company vehicles; perform general inspections; document and report mechanical and/or other problems.
· Maintain service truck supplies and materials inventory.
· Accurately locate, expose and repair mainlines, services and related facilities.
· Install barricades and re-route traffic in a safe manner.
· Operate various types of construction equipment including pneumatic jackhammers or similar equipment to remove dirt, concrete or asphalt.
· Maintain accurate records of assignment tasks.
· Independently operate automated meter reading system or record water consumption in computerized readers.
· Check operation and repair or replace faulty water meters or meter boxes.
· Repair/replace leaking angle stop valves.
· Remove weeds or similar growth around water meter boxes or related appurtenances.
· Install new water meters and meter boxes.
· As directed, respond to customer complaints regarding water supply, water quality or water delivery pressures.
· Respond to damaged fire hydrants or similar appurtenances.
· As directed, turn delinquent water service connections on or off, physically lock off water service connections, or remove water meters.
· Distribute pertinent customer notifications.
· Assigned to regularly scheduled stand-by duty and can be required to perform related duties during any shift.
· Responds to emergency situations on an “as needed” basis.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
· Construction and maintenance methods, procedures, tools, equipment, supplies and materials associated with water distribution system operations.
· Proper work safety standards.
· Approved traffic safety and delineation practices.
· Safe work practices associated with hazardous environments and materials.
· Proper operation of various types of equipment construction used in the water industry.
Ability to:
· Effectively communicate face to face and in writing with Company staff in group and one-to-one settings.
· Perform various levels of physical labor.
· Perform a variety of construction, repair and maintenance tasks.
· Perform duties under routine and emergency conditions; occasionally in inclement or adverse weather conditions.
· Respond to public inquiries and complaints in a tactful, courteous and professional manner.
· Safely operate motor vehicles; safely operate construction equipment typically used in the water industry; and perform service maintenance procedures.
· Anticipate, recognize and manage potential hazards encountered in the course of daily assignments.
· As assigned, perform valve and hydrant inspections, maintenance, and repair work with skill and effectiveness.
· Operate power tools and equipment.
· Read, interpret and understand water atlas sheets or construction drawings.
· Understand and follow oral and written instructions and directions.
· Promote and maintain cooperative working relationships; work efficiently and safely with others.
Experience and Education
High school diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years combined experience in operating and maintaining complex water systems. Any combination equivalent of experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying.
Special Requirements
A valid (Class C) California Drivers’ License
Required to pass a physical examination which includes an initial drug screening with subsequent random fit-to-work evaluations.
Certification as a California, Department of Public Health, Grade T1, Water Treatment Operator.
Certification as a California, Department of Public Health, Grade D2, Water Distribution Operator.
Overtime Assignments
The purveyance of potable water is an essential service to the community, as such, requires the availability of Company personnel at all times. Consequently, employees will be required to respond to emergency calls, accept periodic overtime assignments, and perform any and all duties deemed necessary by the Company.
