Salary Range:

Operator-In-Training OP 171 ($30.1318 – $36.7130 Hourly)

Operator I OP 174 ($34.8779 – $42.4957 Hourly) 

Operator II OP 176 ($38.4496 – $46.8476 Hourly)

Operator III OP 178 ($42.3904 – $51.6476 Hourly)

Operator IV/V OP 180 ($46.7361 – $56.9433 Hourly)

THE POSITION:

Under general supervision, monitors wastewater treatment processes; performs routine laboratory tests; performs a wide variety of skilled tasks in the operation and servicing of machinery and equipment in a wastewater treatment plant; and performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This position serves the front-line operation of the various wastewater treatment facilities. Dependent upon possession and grade of wastewater or water certification, employees will receive various levels of on-the-job training and guidance from operations staff as required to safely and efficiently meet day-to-day compliance. Staff in this position follows prescribed and standardized procedures, under various levels of supervision of a higher-level Operator on duty.

The Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA) secures and supplies supplemental water; collects and treats wastewater; produces high quality renewable products such as recycled water, compost and energy; and promotes the sustainable use of groundwater and development of local water supplies. IEUA serves approximately 935,000 residents in a 242-square mile service area in western San Bernardino County, California. As a regional wastewater treatment agency, IEUA provides sewage utility services to seven contracting agencies and provides wholesale imported water to seven retail agencies. IEUA owns and operates four facilities specializing in regional water recycling services. The facilities take in approximately 50 million gallons of wastewater per day for treatment, producing high-quality recycled water. IEUA also manages the recharge of recycled, storm and imported water through the Chino Basin Groundwater Recharge Program and coordinates regional water-use efficiency and education programs. IEUA is committed to meeting the needs of the region by providing essential services in a regionally planned and cost-effective manner while safeguarding public health, promoting economic development and protecting the environment.

Job Requirements:

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent with additional college-level coursework in chemistry, biology, and wastewater and/or water treatment technology; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Operator III:

At least two years of progressively responsible experience in wastewater or water treatment plant operations; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Experience in a public agency is preferred.

Operator IV/V:

At least four years of progressively responsible experience in skilled, journey-level wastewater or water treatment plant operation; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Experience in a public agency is preferred.

LICENSES; CERTIFICATES; SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

A valid California Class C driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Agency’s vehicle insurance program.

California State Water Resources Control Board Water Treatment and/or Distribution Operator certifications are desirable.

Annual certification for CPR, First Aid, HAZWOPER, forklift, and confined-space entry. Annual completion of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) fit test per OSHA requirements is required within six months of appointment and during the course of employment. The employee may be required to wear other types of respirators, dust, and particulate or cartridge masks dependent upon the work environment.
