UTILITY WORKER TRAINEE 

 

DEFINITION: 

Under direct supervision. Learn to perform varying degrees of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, construction, and operating tasks; and to perform related work. 

DISTINGUISING CHARACTERISTICS: 

Trainee; this is the entry-level class in the Utility Worker series. Trainees typically remain Trainees until they have achieved a Grade 1 Certification as a State of California Department of Public Health Water Distribution Operator or have completed one (1) year employment as a Trainee. 

TYPICAL DUTIES: 

Performs the unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in routine activities of constructing and maintaining water systems; assists in the location and repair of watermain breaks and leaks; loads and unloads material; excavate and backfill trenches with hand and pneumatic tools; sets up and assists in traffic control; assists in the repair and installation of meters, valves, pumps, hydrants; laying joining, and fitting pipe; operates a cement mixer, pipe tapping machine, and similar equipment; rakes and irons hot asphalt materials; assists in general construction and maintenance work; drives crew truck and dump truck; reads meters if necessary; performs work orders and duty assignments; landscape maintenance and customer service.  

MANDATED REQUIREMENTS: 

Must be able to obtain a California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Water Distribution Operator Grade 1 certification within 18 months from date of hire. 

EXPERIENCE: 

Recommended experience include, underground utility installation, construction or mechanical trades. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling lifting, digging talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. 

Incumbents may be subjected to or work near moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions and intense noises. 

Very Heavy Work; Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. 

EDUCATION: 

High School diploma or equivalent  

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

As a condition of employment, you will be required to possess a valid Class C California Drivers License and be insurable under the Districts carrier. Respond to District emergency work at all hours, weekends and holidays.
