Santa Margarita Water District is seeking a dependable and safety-focused Utility Operator (Collections) to support the operation, maintenance, and repair of the District’s wastewater collection infrastructure. This full-time represented position plays a key role in protecting public health and the environment by ensuring the reliable operation of sewer pipelines, manholes, lift stations, and related facilities that serve more than 200,000 residents in Southern Orange County.

This position offers the opportunity to work as part of a collaborative field operations team performing essential work that keeps critical infrastructure operating safely and efficiently.

About the Role

Under general supervision, the Utility Operator (Collections) performs routine and skilled heavy physical work related to the construction, maintenance, mechanical repair, and operation of the District’s wastewater collection system. Operators use a variety of hand tools, power tools, and specialized sewer maintenance equipment to clean, inspect, maintain, and repair sewer infrastructure.

This is the working-level classification in the Utility Operator series. Employees develop and apply technical skills while performing field assignments and may work under the direction of a Senior Utility Operator. As experience and proficiency increase, employees may advance to higher-level classifications.

Essential Functions:

What You Will Do

  • Clean, inspect, and maintain sewer collection pipelines, manholes, and related infrastructure
  • Operate specialized equipment such as jet rodders, vacuum trucks, and inspection equipment used in sewer maintenance
  • Assist with installation, maintenance, and repair of sewer pipelines, laterals, and related system components
  • Perform routine construction, excavation, and site restoration activities associated with system repairs
  • Operate District vehicles, tools, and equipment safely and perform minor maintenance
  • Maintain work records and documentation related to maintenance activities
  • Follow safety procedures including traffic control, confined space entry, and proper use of protective equipment
  • Respond to work orders, service calls, and emergency maintenance needs as required

  • Ability to read maps, follow work orders, and maintain basic maintenance records

Requisite Abilities/Qualifications & Guidelines:

Education & Experience

High school diploma or GED equivalent and experience performing construction, mechanical, or maintenance work related to utility infrastructure, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience working with wastewater or sewer collection systems is desirable.

A valid California driver’s license and required safety certifications—including CPR, First Aid, Confined Space Entry, and SCBA training—must be maintained in accordance with District and OSHA requirements.
