About the Role

Under general supervision, the Utility Operator (Streets) performs skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, facilities, and related infrastructure. This includes excavation, trenching, asphalt and concrete work, and restoring surfaces impacted by utility repairs and maintenance activities.

This is a working-level position that requires independent judgment, strong mechanical aptitude, and the ability to safely operate a variety of tools, vehicles, and heavy equipment. The role supports both planned maintenance and emergency response efforts to ensure safe and reliable infrastructure.

What You Will Do

  • Perform street maintenance including excavation, trenching, backfilling, patching, and resurfacing of asphalt and concrete
  • Restore streets and surfaces following utility repairs and maintenance work
  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as trucks, loaders, compactors, and other construction equipment
  • Assist with installation, repair, and maintenance of District infrastructure and related systems
  • Read and interpret maps, plans, and work orders to complete assignments accurately
  • Maintain work records and documentation related to completed tasks
  • Follow safety procedures including traffic control, trench safety, and proper use of PPE
  • Respond to emergency repairs and participate in standby or after-hours assignments as needed

What You Bring

  • Strong experience in construction, street maintenance, or utility field operations
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment and perform physically demanding work
  • Knowledge of asphalt, concrete, and excavation practices
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a crew in a fast-paced field environment
  • Commitment to safety, quality work, and reliable service delivery

Education & Experience

High school diploma or GED and journey-level experience in construction, street maintenance, or related field work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Public agency or utility experience is preferred.

A valid Class A California driver’s license is required.

A valid D2 Certificate from SWRCB is required.
