Santa Margarita Water District is seeking a skilled and mechanically inclined Systems Operator to support the maintenance, repair, and operation of critical water and wastewater infrastructure. About the Role
Under general supervision, the Systems Operator performs technical and skilled work involving the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of complex mechanical systems and equipment used throughout the District’s infrastructure. This is the working-level classification in the Systems Operator series and requires the ability to independently perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on a wide range of systems.
The role works closely with Crew Chiefs, Supervisors, and other operations staff and may participate in planned system shutdowns, emergency repairs, and standby assignments.

What You Will Do
- Install, maintain, and repair mechanical systems and equipment including pumps, valves, compressors, motors, and hydraulic systems
- Diagnose equipment issues and perform troubleshooting, rebuilds, and corrective maintenance
- Perform preventive and predictive maintenance, including lubrication analysis and equipment inspections
- Assist with maintenance and repair of chemical feed systems and respond to system leaks or failures
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to plan and execute work
- Operate District vehicles, tools, and equipment safely and perform minor maintenance
- Maintain accurate records, work logs, and inspection documentation
- Participate in system shutdowns, startups, and emergency response activities, including standby assignments
What You Bring
- Strong mechanical aptitude and experience working with pumps, motors, valves, and industrial equipment
- Ability to diagnose and repair complex mechanical systems
- Knowledge of maintenance practices, tools, and safety procedures in a utility or industrial environment
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents and plans
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Commitment to safety, teamwork, and reliable work practices
Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED and at least one year of journey-level experience in the maintenance and repair of pumping equipment and mechanical systems, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Public agency experience is preferred.
A valid California Class C driver’s license is required. Appropriate State Water Resources Control Board certifications (e.g., D2 and T1) are required based on assignment.
