Position Summary

Reporting to the Water Operations Supervisor, the General Maintenance worker ensures that all Gage Canal equipment is properly maintained by troubleshooting, inspecting, servicing, testing, and repairing all equipment. Conducts meter reading and operates medium size construction equipment and maintains Gage Canal facilities.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Perform daily duties as assigned by the Water Operations Supervisor.

Conducts maintenance and repairs.

Maintain grounds by performing weed abatement, repairing fences, clearing trash and debris, etc.

Evaluate work methods and procedures used in field operations, recommending improvements.

Adhere to all safety procedures and actively participate in monthly safety meetings.

Make water changes as requested; drive daily route and document meter reads; inspect engines for efficient operations.

Maintain a maintenance schedule for all equipment and systems facilities.

Recommend the purchase of equipment and assist in the development of specifications.

Communication with City of Riverside regarding daily water changes.

Participate in conferences with engineers, contractors, and other utilities, and City staff regarding projects and project problems.

Must be able to maintain a satisfactory attendance record with minimal absences and tardiness.

Requirements

1. High school diploma or equivalent. Experience working in a customer focused organization.

2. A minimum of 2 years of experience related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

3. Ability to interact professionally with diplomacy, patience, and courtesy with diverse groups; ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships while providing exceptional customer service.

4. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid, Class “C” California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

5. Must maintain current California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record. Enrollment in DMV EPN program and maintain current California minimum automobile insurance.

6.Possession of either a SWRCB Grade I or II Distribution Certification or SWRCB Grade I or II Treatment Certification.

7. Must have SWRCB I or II Distribution Certification and SWRCB Grade I or II Treatment Certification within twelve (12) months of hire date.

Preferred Qualification

Some course work in water sciences.

Welding experience and certificate.

California Class “A” driver’s license.

Possession of both SWRCB I or II Distribution Certification and SWRCB I or II Treatment Certification.

Work Environment

This position works in outside environments with fluctuating temperatures ranging from 30 to 120. Air quality can be dry, dusty, wet, and/or humid. May be exposed to occasional fumes, odors, gases, and vibrations in the external environment. Noise level can be moderate to high.

Conditions of Employment

Must pass a pre-employment background check.

Physical Demands

· Ability to lift and transport up to 100 lbs. for up to 50 feet at a time.

· Ability to sit for long periods, sometimes up to 3 ½ hours at a time.

· Ability to make repetitive substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers in order to operate tools and machinery.

· Ability to communicate in written or verbal modalities to write reports and communicate with internal and external customer.

· Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, walk, stand, lift, climb, and move about constantly throughout the day.

· Ability to drive for work-related purposes.
