JOB INFORMATION

THE POSITION:

Machinist positions work in a machine shop and/or field environment and set up, operate and maintain lathes, drill presses, grinders, milling machines, boring machines, honing equipment and other machine shop tools to lay out, cut, form and shape parts and tools; read blue prints, schematics and technical manuals; research and order parts; assemble/disassemble, repair, rebuild and manufacture pumps, compressors, valves and similar equipment; and perform other duties as assigned.

   NOTES:

  • Eligible benefited employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Machinist employees may be required to work an extended period of nights or unusual shifts for which they may receive 5% additional pay.
  • Machinist employees may be required to work in closed, confined spaces and/or high platforms and other hazardous conditions, which may include lifting, carrying, and/or pulling items weighing up to 50 pounds.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: You must meet ONE of the following options:

  1. Successful completion of a state-accredited four-year Machinist Apprenticeship Training Program.
  2. Four years of full-time experience in ALL phases of work as a journey-level Machinist. 

   NOTES: 

  • Experience as a Computer Numerical Control Machine Operator or Programmer only is NOT qualifying. 
  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

LICENSE:  A valid California Class C Driver’s License may be required at the time of hire.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Experience in manually operating lathes and milling machines for parts fabrication and repair, as well as single-point threading.
  • Experience with computer-controlled balancing machines.
  • Experience in disassembly/assembly, repair, and rebuild of pumps, blowers, speed reducers, valves, motors, and related wastewater equipment.

  • Proof of apprenticeship completion, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
