Summary:
The Fleet Mechanic II is responsible for ensuring that District automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other power-driven equipment are operating safely and efficiently. This position is classified as Fleet Mechanic II and is part of the Fleet Department. The position receives general supervision from the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor and may exercise technical and functional direction over lower-level staff.
Essential Job Functions:
The following examples illustrate the general nature and level of work assigned to this classification. They are not intended to be an exhaustive or exclusive list of all duties that may be required. The District reserves the right to assign additional responsibilities as needed.
· Diagnose and determine the scope of repairs for automobiles, trucks, construction equipment, and other mechanical assets.
· Perform comprehensive mechanical repairs on gasoline, diesel, natural gas, and propane-powered engines and equipment.
· Inspect, adjust, and replace all components of vehicles and equipment.
· Service and repair fuel, cooling, electrical, and exhaust systems, and perform engine tuning using diagnostic tools.
· Conduct preventive maintenance, including oil changes, lubrication, safety checks, and scheduled inspections.
· Develop and follow routine inspection schedules; troubleshoot mechanical and equipment failures.
· Plan and organize assigned projects, estimate labor and material needs, and help manage parts, tools, and supply inventories.
· Assist other personnel with complex or emergency repairs and collaborate on maintenance activities.
· Read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and blueprints to guide repair, installation, and servicing tasks.
· Conduct advanced troubleshooting of electrical, on-board diagnostic, and mechanical systems.
· Perform basic inspection of terminals (BIT) as required by California Highway Patrol.
· Maintain safe, orderly workspaces and complete accurate computerized records and reports of maintenance activities.
· Operation, calibration, and safe use of shop, diagnostic, power, and hand tools in accordance with District rules and industry safety standards.
· Performs electric and oxy-acetylene welding in the fabrication and repair of equipment, structures, tools, and other related parts; designs, lays out, and fabricates equipment and vehicle upfit parts; rebuilds broken equipment and parts, as necessary.
Qualifications:
· Six (6) years of responsible experience performing routine repair of automobiles, trucks, or power-driven equipment.
· Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
· OE Manufacture Certification or Automotive Technology certificates.
· Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) series certification in a minimum of 5 areas.
· ASE Deisel Engine Performance (T2) certification.
· Valid California Class B Driver’s License with the appropriate endorsements and satisfactory driving record is desired. The endorsements must include air brake, tanker and hazmat endorsements. Must obtain within 6 months of hire date.
· Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 609 Certification.
· HD Air Brake Repair Training and Completion within 12 months of hire date.
Physical Requirements:
The job involves medium to heavy physical work, including bending, kneeling, stooping, climbing, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 90 pounds (or more with lifting equipment). Sufficient vision is needed to read materials, gauges, screens, and color-coded wiring, and hearing and speech are required. Work is primarily in a maintenance shop with exposure to loud noise, vibration, confined spaces, dust, chemicals, fumes, grease, oils, solvents, hot surfaces, moving machinery, and vehicle traffic.

Disaster Service Workers:
All Orange County Water District employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employees are required to complete all related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
