Communications Specialist (PT)

JOB DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, assists in the planning, development, and coordination of customer engagement and outreach materials; creates social media and website content; assists in organizing community and special events; assists with the coordination and implementation of public awareness and educational programs relating to District services; designs communication pieces; and performs related duties as assigned.
- Prepares communication, marketing, and outreach campaigns and/or materials, including news releases, flyers, posters, media clips, and educational materials; collaborates with other departments and vendors; designs graphics and videos using various software; coordinates with vendors and consultants to ensure materials are produced on time and to quality standards.
- Coordinates and supports aspects of the District’s outreach and education program, which may include scheduling and conducting tours, assisting various departments with their communications needs, developing curriculum, organizing educational events and developing curriculum, and assisting in producing awards nominations.
- Organizes and carries out administrative assignments; requests quotes and processes invoices; researches, compiles, and organizes information and data from various sources on a variety of specialized topics related to public outreach, events, and projects; checks and tabulates standard mathematical and statistical data; prepares and assembles reports, articles, announcements, and other informational and/or outreach materials.
- Plans, organizes, and conducts events for a variety of community audiences; collaborates with District staff, partner agencies, vendors, community groups, and the community to develop and implement events tailored to the community’s interests and needs.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Equivalent to an associate degree from an accredited college with major coursework in public relations, communications, business administration, or a related field.
- Two (2) years of experience in customer service, marketing, public relations, or related experience.
LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS
- Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment.
ABOUT THIS POSITION
This position will have the opportunity to work on various outreach programs and communication projects within the Public Affairs Department. We seek someone eager to take on new challenges and join a team of seasoned Public Affairs professionals. In this role, the chosen applicant may participate in event planning, agency marketing, developing social media content, composing website content, crafting an internal newsletter, drafting press releases, attending events, and supporting other special related projects for JCSD.
This is a part-time, non-benefited position averaging 18-23 hours per week within the Public Affairs Department. This position may require work on weekends and evenings for special events and projects outside of typically scheduled hours. Certain projects require the applicant to organize work independently, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow up on assignments. The selected applicant will effectively represent the Public Affairs Department at external events, internal meetings, and within the community.
