Auto & Equipment Mechanic Assistant - One Year Limited-Term Contract (LTC)

The Auto & Equipment Mechanic Assistant supports experienced mechanics in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, and powered tools. Working under close supervision, the Assistant performs a variety of support tasks to ensure smooth shop operations while learning safety protocols, repair techniques, and preventive maintenance procedures.
This is a Limited Term Contract position for individuals seeking hands-on experience in fleet maintenance, repair operations, and shop support services.
The mission of the Recharge Operations Department at OCWD is to replenish the groundwater basin and manage the conservation pool behind Prado Dam. This entails recharging the Santa Ana River baseflows and stormflows and imported water. These operations include the use, preventative maintenance, and repair of automotive, heavy equipment, and other powered equipment.
Examples of Duties

- Assist mechanics in routine maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles and equipment such as trucks, trailers, electric carts, and portable machinery.
- Wash, clean, and prepare vehicles and equipment for service or repair.
- Organize tools, parts, and work areas to support daily shop operations.
- Pick up and deliver parts, tools, and vehicles as directed.
- Clean and maintain the shop, oil room, and workspaces.
- Assist with updating maintenance logs, inspection checklists, and inventory records.
- Learn to use diagnostic equipment and hand tools safely and effectively.
- Follow all safety protocols and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Observe and assist in basic troubleshooting and inspections under the supervision of senior mechanics.
- Support the preparation of vehicles for field deployment or surplus.
- Handles job stress.
- Interacts effectively with others in the workplace.
- Follows all workplace and job safety rules and policies.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Tools provided by the District.
Typical Qualifications
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge of:
- Basic knowledge of or interest in automotive and heavy equipment maintenance.
Ability and Skills in:
- Willingness to learn shop procedures, tools, safety practices, and maintenance techniques.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to stay organized.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to safely lift, move, and carry up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs occasionally.
- Must be dependable and motivated to learn.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE GUIDELINES
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training: High school diploma or G.E.D., supplemented by specialized training or coursework in automotive maintenance or a related field.
Experience: Prior experience working in a shop environment preferred.
License: Valid California Class C Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Physical: Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions and intense noises. Use of PPE required to protect individual from workplace exposures. Incumbents require sufficient physical ability to work in an office setting; stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; operate office equipment including use of a computer keyboard; push, pull, lift, and/or carry light amounts of weight; verbally communicate to exchange information.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; and to operate assigned equipment.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS
All Orange County Water District employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employees are required to complete all related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
Supplemental Information
TERM:
The term of the Auto & Equipment Mechanic Assistant position will be a one-year appointment via a limited-term (at will) contract, with the possibility of future renewals, contingent on satisfactory performance, availability of funds, and District needs. The start date of the position is contingent upon approval of the contract by the Board of Directors.
Hourly Range: $33.00 per hour (Non-exempt)
