The City of Tacoma’s Environmental Services Department has an exciting opportunity for a qualified and talented Associate Civil Engineer. The Asset Management and Technology Services Division is seeking a highly motivated and detailed oriented individual who is interested in working on diverse and challenging programs and projects to join their dynamic award-winning team.

We provide stormwater, wastewater, and solid waste services to the citizens of Tacoma. We operate and maintain over 700 miles of wastewater pipes and 500 miles of stormwater pipes, along with 53 pump stations, two wastewater treatment plants and several stormwater treatment systems. The wastewater treatment plants process over 250 million gallons of wastewater each day, into Commencement Bay.

Who you will be working with:

You will be joining our Asset Management and Technology Services(AM&TS) Division which provides engineering, planning, program management and application and data management services to the City’s wastewater, stormwater, and solid waste utilities. AM&TS primary works on:

  • Provide engineering support to Operation & Maintenance and Planning & Development with regards to the wastewater and stormwater utilities
  • Perform capacity analysis for the treatment plants, pump stations and collection system for wastewater and stormwater utilities
  • Evaluate likelihood & consequence of failure of assets to establish mitigation measures
  • Management of the Capital Improvement Plan related to the wastewater and stormwater utilities’ infrastructure.
  • Development and maintenance of applications to support business needs for the wastewater, stormwater and solid waste utilities

Your Team:  

 You will be part of the Collections System and Facilities Teams within the AM&TS Division which is responsible for asset management related activities for the collection systems, pump stations and treatment plants. This includes performing condition assessment, treatment process studies, long range planning, scoping of capital improvement projects and the management of the Capital Improvement Plan. 

Your Responsibilities: 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Assess the condition of assets using internal video inspections and other inspection technologies.
  • Assist with developing mitigation strategies for assets through a holistic and phased approach into defined capital improvement projects.
  • Evaluate capacity requirements.
  • Assist the Planning Department with technical questions from developers. 
  • Provide engineering supports to Operation & Maintenance with regards to the wastewater and stormwater utilities.
  • Perform reviews on engineering plans.
  • Respond to requests for information from field crews, colleagues, management, and general public with regards to the wastewater and stormwater systems.
  • Assist with performing hydraulic modeling analysis to identify and develop mitigation strategies to address capacity deficiencies in the wastewater and stormwater collection systems. 
  • Define project scope, perform cost estimates and coordinate with other departments to establish project partnership agreements.
  • Evaluate system impacts related to new development.
  • Procure and administer contracts with consultants providing engineering and professional services. Coordinate and review the work of the outside consultant. Manage the contract scope and budget to control costs and ensure delivered work is acceptable. 

 

Qualifications

Minimum Education*

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering or directly related field

Minimum Experience*

Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements

As Assigned: Washington State Driver’s License

*Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions 

  • Position may require driving, sitting, standing, walking, or climbing for long periods of time. 
  • Work performed in office, field, and other environments. 

Telework/Remote Work

Compensation & Benefits

Pay Details: 

Hourly Rate: $42.68 – $60.08 

Annual Salary: $88,774.40 – $124,966.40
