Assistant / Associate Engineer, Project Coordinator II

JOB DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision and/or direction, performs and assists with professional work related to development and capital improvement project oversight for water, wastewater, and recycled water infrastructure. Responsibilities include supporting and managing projects through all phases of planning, design, construction, inspection, observation, and project close-out, as well as performing related duties as assigned.
Assistant / Associate Engineer
- Oversee and administer development and capital improvement projects through completion, on-time, and within budget.
- Conduct complex engineering research projects and studies, analyze complex problems, evaluate alternatives, make sound recommendations, and prepare effective technical staff reports.
- Prepare, analyze, understand, and interpret engineering construction plans, specifications, and other contract documents, and determine conformance with applicable laws and standards.
- Analyze, interpret, summarize, and present administrative and technical information and data in an effective manner.
- Assist in and develop and administer contracts for professional services and construction in a public agency setting.
- Recognize discrepancies from “as-built” to contract specifications and recommend reconciliation.
- Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
- Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Project Coordinator II

- Conduct complex construction project management research projects and studies, analyze complex problems, evaluate alternatives, make sound recommendations, and prepare effective technical staff reports.
- Prepare, analyze, understand, and interpret construction plans, specifications, and other contract documents, and determine conformance with applicable laws and standards.
- Analyze, interpret, summarize, and present administrative and technical information and data in an effective manner.
- Perform mathematical and construction project management computations with precision.
- Recognize discrepancies from “as-built” to contract specifications and recommend reconciliation.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Assistant Engineer: Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with major coursework in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. No experience required.
- Associate Engineer: Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with major coursework in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Three years of increasingly responsible experience in professional engineering design, plan review, and project administration.
- Project Coordinator II: Equivalent to an associate degree from an accredited college with coursework in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in construction project management and project administration.
LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS
- Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment.
- Assistant Engineer: Possession of, or successful acquisition within twelve (12) months of appointment, valid CPR/First Aid/AED Certifications, to be maintained throughout employment. No other licenses or certifications required.
- Associate Engineer: Possession of, or successful acquisition within twelve (12) months of appointment, valid CPR/First Aid/AED Certifications, to be maintained throughout employment. Possession of a valid Engineer-In-Training Certification issued by the State of California, to be maintained throughout employment.
- Project Coordinator II: Possession of a valid certification as a Construction Manager-in-Training (CMIT) by the Construction Management Association of America, to be maintained throughout employment.
