DEFINITION:

Under direction, directs, coordinates, and supervises the activities and operations of the water treatment and production operations; implements maintenance policies and procedures; outlines, assigns, and determines work projects; supervises the operations of pumping and treatment facilities; evaluates and reports water test results; performs other related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Water Production Supervisor is the supervisory class assigned to manage the daily operations of a major water production division. Positions within this class serve as managers for all water production related functions, including the construction, maintenance, and operation of telemetry, wells, pumps, meters, engines, and related water treatment facilities. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Water Manager in that the latter has overall responsibility for the administration and management of all water maintenance operations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:

Receives direction from the Water Manager. Incumbents in this class exercise direct and indirect supervision over training personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (include but are not limited to the following):

  • Supervises, inspects, and participates in the work of crews engaged in the assigned water treatment and production activities, including the maintenance and repair of water treatment, booster, and pumping facilities.
  • Schedules and oversees preventative maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment; outlines unusual work assignments and special projects according to general instructions; coordinates and provides liaison to contractors; inspects completed work.
  • Determines work assignments and utilization of personnel, equipment and materials; makes necessary purchases for materials, equipment, and supplies; reviews inventories; maintains and reviews related records.
  • Coordinates water production operations activities with water distribution staff, and other City departments; assists and oversees the design of related capital improvements projects; purchases equipment and supplies.
  • Prepares routine reports regarding water treatment according to established procedure; prepares and maintains records of plant operations activity.
  • Assists in the development and installation of new equipment and systems; performs supplies and equipment purchasing in accordance with established procedures; provides liaison to vendors and contractors; inspects work performed.
  • Evaluates service needs, work methods, and operations; evaluates facility maintenance procedures to determine effectiveness; recommends changes to increase effectiveness to meet departmental objectives.
  • Plans and assigns work for personnel; trains new employees as required; prepares performance evaluations of assigned personnel; recommends disciplinary action as necessary.
  • Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff, and the public.
