NOTE: Concurrent to this recruitment, we are recruiting for Water Treatment/Distribution Operator Trainee. Applicants who may be interested in both water and wastewater trainee positions must apply separately for both recruitments.
The Wastewater Plant Operator Trainee (WWPOT) performs a variety of routine cleaning, maintenance, operational and related duties involved in the continuous operation of a large metropolitan wastewater treatment plant. As the entry-level operator-in-training, the WWPOT receives on-the-job training and experience in operating a wastewater treatment plant. After gaining experience and achieving proficiency, a WWPOT is required to advance to a Wastewater Plant Operator I after approximately 12 to 14 months, then to a Wastewater Plant Operator II within 36 to 48 months.
Typical duties performed under the lead or direction of a journey-level operator or supervisor include:
· Removing screenings and grit; cleaning primary, secondary and other wastewater treatment equipment and facilities.
· Lubricating pumps, conveyors, chains, motors and other machinery and equipment used in a wastewater treatment plant.
· Ensuring facilities are clean and orderly.
· Loading and unloading materials, supplies and equipment; assisting in the storage and transfer of chlorine and other treatment chemicals.
· Performing routine maintenance, painting of machinery, structures, equipment and piping.
· Assisting in maintaining lawns, trees and shrubbery in areas surrounding assigned structures.
· Collecting wastewater, scum, grit, sludge samples and other materials.
· Performing routine control tests and interpreting data using mathematical formulas.
· Reading meters, gauges, charts and instruments; changing recording charts and assuring their continuous operation.
· Keeping operational records such as plant operations log, test results, unusual operating conditions and maintenance work performed.
· Using common hand and power tools.
The salary range is $7,937 per month increasing to $8,334, $8,751, and $9,189 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.

Requirements:
1. A high school diploma or its equivalent.
2. No direct experience is required.
3. Possession of or ability to obtain within one month of hire a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator-in-Training certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB).
4. Mandatory advancement requires successful completion of:
– In house proficiency testing.
– Tests administered by the SWRCB to obtain Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade I and II licenses.
5. Possession of a valid California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
6. Willingness to work assigned shifts, weekends and holidays as scheduled, as wastewater treatment operations run 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Trainees typically work the day shift for the first year.
7. Capable of sustained climbing, standing and walking, and of lifting heavy materials such as 50-lb chemical sacks.
8. Willingness to work with and around chemicals used in wastewater treatment process, to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and to be clean shaven with advance notice as required to wear respiratory protective equipment.
