Systems Maintenance Worker I
Summary Description
Entry level position; under supervision, performs both routine and skilled heavy physical work and a variety of other duties in the construction, maintenance, repair and operation of water distribution and sewer collection systems. This is an entry level position; current employees may advance to the next level upon gaining experience, demonstrating proficiency and obtaining needed certifications.
Representative Duties
- Read meters on an assigned route and enter the readings into computerized, hand-held computer.
- Complete all service orders such as turn on, turn off, reads and meter checks.
- Reports any unsafe conditions observed in the field and provides recommendations for resolving those unsafe conditions.
- Install, maintain and repair water distribution and sewer systems, including pipelines, taps, laterals, valves, meter services and fire hydrants. Exercise valves and perform system shutdown under supervision and direction of a Worker II, Supervisor or Manager.
- Perform landscaping and grounds maintenance duties, construction and maintenance work as needed.
- Excavate, shore and backfill trenches. Cut, patch, repair and resurface streets. Clean up work sites. Raising and lowering of valve cans as required.
- Observe safe work methods and practices in all work. Utilizes cones, flags and any other appropriate safety equipment to secure worksites from traffic.
- Inspect vehicles and perform minor maintenance. Fuel and lubricate vehicles and equipment appropriately. Operate assigned vehicles skillfully and safely, using safe driving practices. Report the need for major repairs and service.
- Operate and maintains a wide variety of power tools and equipment related in work assignments.
- Read and interpret maps, schematics, plans and specifications. Complete basic records related to work performed. Collect and record data in a complete and accurate manner.
- May train and direct the work of others on a specific job.
- Respond to emergency situations during off-hours as required. Stand duty on a rotational basis, work outside of regular work hours as necessary, including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Ability to:
- Perform skilled and semi-skilled duties involved in the operation, maintenance and repair of both water distribution and sewer collection systems with over 1,200 service connections; residential, commercial and irrigation.
- Demonstrates skill in the use of tools and equipment and in the diagnosing and repairing of equipment.
- Communicate by telephone while on standby duty.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Certification
Possession of a valid Class C Drivers License
Possession of a valid Grade D1 Water Distribution Operator Certificate, issued by the State Water Resources Control Board, obtained within 12 months of date of hire, desired.
Education/Training
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
One year of work experience in construction, plumbing or maintenance.
Knowledge
· Methods and techniques utilized in construction, plumbing and maintenance work.
· Proper procedures used for maintenance and repair using hand and power tools.
· Learn pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations [training to be provided].
· Principals and procedures of record keeping [training to be provided].
Physical Demands and Working Environment
· Outdoor field environment, exposure to noise and all types of weather and temperature conditions; exposure to hazardous materials; work and/or walk on various types of
surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain. Employees may be required to work evenings, nights and weekends.
· Employees require sufficient mobility to work in a field environment; walk for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch and reach; push, pull, lift and/or
carry light to moderate amounts of weights; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; ability to verbally communicate to exchange information.
