Maintenance Worker
HOURLY PAY: $31.30 – $38.05
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of the Facilities Supervisor, performs hard physical labor in a variety of construction trades and provides maintenance on District structures, mains, and appurtenances. As a condition of employment, this position is required to standby and work as an emergency crew (duty) person on a rotating basis covering nights, holidays and weekends. Applies all standard safety practices.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs a variety of maintenance activities, such as repairing water services; replacing and installing meters (including digital or electronic meter reading devices), meter boxes and valves; and digging ditches, culverts, and cleaning drains and gutters with power or hand tools.
2. Performs ground maintenance around pump stations, reservoirs and/or other District facilities. Loads tools, supplies and equipment.
3. Operates construction and maintenance equipment such as soil compactors, pneumatic tools, compressors, skid steers, mowers, dump trucks, pickups and crew trucks. Utilizes a variety of hand tools and specialized equipment to perform installation and maintenance on water system appurtenances.
4. Performs and assists with facility locations and leak detection using electronic equipment.
5. Assists with water distribution related tasks such as emergency and scheduled shutdowns, including notifying customers and other affected parties and/or agencies and ensuring District compliance with its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit. Investigates, troubleshoots and reports leaks in the water distribution system.
6. Standby and work as an emergency crew (duty) person on a rotating basis covering nights, holidays and weekends. Emergency crew personnel are required to be able to report to the District’s headquarters facility within 45 minutes. Employees on standby may not consume alcoholic beverages or be under the influence of controlled substances, as described in the District’s Personnel Policies Manual.
7. Checks crew truck; assembles necessary supplies and maintains adequate parts inventory.
8. Makes routine log entries and notes on paper or computer generated forms.
9. Reads and interprets District maps, as-built drawings and geographical information system web-based mapping.
10. Performs related work as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Experience in construction and/or maintenance in a water or sewer utility is desirable.
2. Must have a valid California driver’s license and be acceptable to the District’s automobile liability insurance carrier.
3. Must establish and maintain effective working relations with other personnel and promote good relations with the public.
4. Must possess a Water Distribution Operator D1 certification administered by the California Drinking Water Operator Certification program.
5. Must pass fit testing for an air purifying respirator.

Regular employees in this position may join the Teamster Union. The Maintenance Worker is a non-exempt position and eligible for overtime compensation under the Fair Labor Standards Act and in accordance with District Policy.
