Salary Range: $50,939.20 – $63,502.40 Annually

Eastern Municipal Water District is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a vacancy in our Mechanical Services Department for the position of Maintenance Trades Assistant. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 

Under immediate supervision, the Maintenance Trades Assistant performs unskilled and semi-skilled work in assisting and supporting craft and trade personnel in the construction, maintenance, repair, and servicing of District systems, facilities, vehicles, and equipment; and performs related duties, as assigned. Employees in this classification are subject to on-call, which may include rotating-duty schedule, weekends, and 24-hour emergency call-out with little or no notice.

IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate for this position will have a basic understanding of mechanical systems, pumps, chemical systems, plumbing, and coating systems. They will also have knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures to keep equipment running smoothly; familiarity with OSHA regulations and safety standards to ensure a safe working environment; and proficiency in the use of hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment, such as hoists and compressors. The ideal candidate will also have the ability to assist with routine maintenance and repairs on mechanical systems; problem-solving skills to diagnose and fix issues efficiently; the ability to work well in a team, contributing positively to group efforts and managing conflicts. Additionally, they will be meticulous in performing tasks and flexible to adapt to changing situations and learn new technologies and/or techniques.

New Hire Objectives: Within the first three months of employment, the selected incumbent will gain knowledge of EMWD policies, procedures, and facilities, and within 18-months they will have attained their Class A Commercial Driver License with HazMat endorsements.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: 

This entry-level classification performs routine construction, maintenance, repair, and servicing of District systems, facilities, vehicles, and equipment duties. Incumbents may be assigned to multiple trades areas to assist journey level staff. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.

Required Skills

KNOWLEDGE OF: 

• Methods, techniques, tools, and equipment common to the building and/or public works construction fields.

• Shop mathematics.

• District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.

• Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and District staff.

• The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

• Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.

 

ABILITY TO: 

• Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools used in the work.

• Accurately read meters, gauges, valve books, blueprints, and schematic drawings.

• Maintain records.

• Follow and apply written and oral work instructions.

• Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.

• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.

• Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Required Experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE:  

• One (1) year of experience in the use of hand and power tools, equipment, and machinery associated with the construction, mechanical, electrical, or building trades.

 

EDUCATION:  

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

 

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:  

• A valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s Vehicle Insurance Policy;

• The ability to obtain a Class A driver’s license, with hazmat and tank endorsements, within 18 months of date of hire, and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s Vehicle Insurance Policy. All District employees required to possess a valid Class A driver’s license for the performance of their duties shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing pursuant to District policy and federal law.
