Qualification summary: 

 

Possess the ability to comprehend, carry out and relay multiple verbal and written instructions and to undertake heavy physical effort. I have extensive knowledge of the methods, practices, materials and tools used in the repair of potable water and sanitary sewer systems. I possess a working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions. I have the ability to perform tasks requiring mechanical aptitude, to read and comprehend blueprints, charts and technical repair manuals, to work from sketches, building plans, specifications and oral and written instructions and to prepare required reports and record maintenance activities. The San Diego County Region Internship Program is orientated for getting the training necessary to qualify positions in the field of water and wastewater industries.  Following are descriptions of what training and experience obtained from four agencies.

 

Olivenhain Municipal Water District, Encinitas, CA

Construction of a new fire hydrant- installed CL 150 PVC pipe to the bury elbow supported by a thrust block then to the bury extension supported by a anchor block followed by placing the break off riser supported by concrete pad ending with the hydrant.  Collect water samples from various distribution system locations, performed scheduled preventative maintenance as a Maintenance & Electrical Technician.

 
 

City of Escondido Water Operations Division, Escondido, CA

Replaced non-functioning water meters including faulty angle valves (curb stops), and turn valves (customer valves).  Performed hydrant maintenance by replacing both the 2-inch and 4-inch gaskets on the discharge ports, replaced packing, and applied anti-seize to the brass turn valve key.  Collected water samples from various distributions system location to ensure residuals are restored to mandated levels.   Participated in the excavation of buried main lines or service lines to repair leaks, as required, buy the maintenance procedures in order to restore service.  Perform valve exercising in the field as part of the schedule preventative maintenance and flushing in the field to dead end mains to maintain water quality and chlorine residuals, and performed the task of a meter reader.  Requested to work with the Collections Department to gain familiarity with the Vactor 2000 Truck and Closed Circuit TV Truck in recording present conditions of sewer mains.

Duties include cleaning out the headwork’s facilities (auger), washing weirs, skimming floc and suspended solids, washing down the weirs, media filters, taking samples from the influent waters (primary and secondary basins),  and observing samples in the laboratory identifying and categorizing findings.  Assist plant operators in fulfilling normal daily tasks, or assigned tasks by Plant Supervisor and/or Senior Plant Operator.
