JOB INFORMATION
The Water System Operations Group, Water Treatment Section, currently has one (1) opening for an Operator I at the Skinner Water Treatment Plant on the Treatment O&M Team. The Skinner Water Treatment Plant has a total capacity of 630 MGD and utilizes both conventional and direct filtration using dual and multi-media filtration and disinfection by chlorine, chloramines and ozone, and is monitored through a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
Positions allocated to this classification are responsible for assisting the Plant Operators in the daily operation of the Skinner Water Treatment Plant processes and all associated facilities, structures, and equipment including monitoring and controlling treatment process performance.
The functions of this classification include, but are not limited to: • Monitors backwash process of filters and removes and places into service filter beds in accordance with water flow changes. Monitors filter performance and makes adjustments, as directed. • Unloads, stores, transfers, and mixes chemicals; and under close supervision, makes chemical feed adjustments as directed. • Operates water treatment systems and processes including auxiliary equipment such as pumps, solids processing equipment, flocculators, and chemical feed systems. • Under close supervision, collects water samples for laboratory control tests and performs tests as directed. • Maintains daily operational logs and reports as required. • Positions assigned to a District Water Treatment Plant, or Chemical Unloading Facility, may be called upon to assess and respond to chemical releases and spills. • Positions assigned to a District Water Treatment Plant, or Chemical Unloading Facility, shall observe operational and safety regulations pertaining to Metropolitan’s Chemical Responder Program. • Performs other related work as required.
Work schedule: 12.5-hour day and night shifts on a rotational basis. Working holidays may also be required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Requirements: Education and Experience • One year experience as an Operator Trainee; OR one year’s experience in the operation or maintenance of pumping, water distribution or water filtration plants. • Will be required to take a color-blindness determination exam.
Licenses/Certification Required • A Grade II Water Treatment (T2) Operator Certificate, as issued by the State of California, is required for employees assigned to water distribution or treatment facilities. • A valid California Class III driver's license is required.
If the position requires a college/university degree, said degree must have been issued by an educational institution recognized as accredited by the United States Department of Education. Degrees issued by educational institutions outside the United States must include documentation validating the equivalency of that degree to the same degree in the United States to be considered acceptable for Metropolitan purposes.
Physical Requirements: Class 4 – Heavy • This class involves frequent lifting over 25 pounds often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions which occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in safety positions. • Positions assigned to a District Water Treatment Plant, or Chemical Unloading Facility, shall receive training in the use of appropriate safety equipment, including a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), and shall be required to maintain the ability to wear a SCBA.
Selection Procedure: • The application and response to the supplemental questionnaire will be used to screen an applicant’s ability to meet the minimum requirements. Based on a comparative analysis, only those candidates demonstrating the strongest backgrounds will be invited to move forward to participate in taking a technical written test.* • Based on the score of the technical written test, candidates will be invited to an oral interview. * Metropolitan policy provides for all internal applicants to participate in all portions of the examination process if they meet the minimum requirements.
